10. linking instead of explaining. It annoys me, if the writer doesn't bother to explain or clarify difficult parts/concepts but links to a wikipedia page instead. That's just laziness. All the info you need to understand the text should be in the text. I think.

Great post, by the way.

Great post, Caroline, with good points we all need to be reminded of from time to time (it's so easy to get carried away or become too lazy...), whether we are pros or beginners. PS: I didn't know about Zemanta -- top tip, thanks!

10. Expecting your readers to do the work for you. ;-)

(Actually, that's quite a good technique for encouraging debate)

Somewhat in breach of point 6 here ;)

Good post, I'd really agree with the paragraph thing, readability is so much improved by breaking up text in 3 or 4 line chunks.

I agree that Twitter seems to be used by a minority of students.

I'm leading a discussion today on challenges journalists face in the modern newsroom, as part of a University assignment, and have had to tone down the Twitter content, as of a class of around 10 of us, just my co-presenter and I have active accounts.

My main worry with Twitter is that it takes a while to see the appeal, at least in the eyes of everyday individuals testing it out for the first time.

I use Twitter, mainly, for journalistic means. It's a good opportunity to network, and connect with people I wouldn't have been able to but by chance.

When my friends ask me, 'so what's the point of Twitter?' I usually find myself responding with a sentence similar to 'well, I use it for journalism, but I'm not sure'.

Other than being a great opportunity stalk celebrities and see follows 'trends', what is the real appeal of Twitter?

It's a real shame: Myspace is a terrible social network nowadays but it's a perfect entertainment site. This is what Facebook has spotted and wish to cash in on by this new deal. Lets hope they sort this out soon.
